File Bandwidth & Transfer Time Calculator
Calculate download/upload time for any file size and internet speed.
Transfer time appears here
Enter file size and speed, then click Calculate.
Transfer Time Formula
Time (s) = File Size (bits) ÷ Speed (bits/second)
Convert file size to bits: 1 GB = 1,073,741,824 bytes × 8 = 8,589,934,592 bits.
Convert speed to bps: 100 Mbps = 100 × 1,000,000 = 100,000,000 bps.
Example: 10 GB file at 100 Mbps
File in bits = 10 × 1024³ × 8 = 85,899,345,920 bits
Speed = 100 × 10⁶ = 100,000,000 bps
Time = 85,899,345,920 ÷ 100,000,000 = 858.99 seconds ≈ 14 min 19 sec
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Mbps and MBps?
Mbps = megabits per second (network speeds). MBps = megabytes per second (file sizes). 1 MBps = 8 Mbps. ISPs advertise in Mbps; file sizes are in MB/GB. This calculator handles both automatically.
Why is my actual download slower than calculated?
Real-world factors include: protocol overhead (~5–10%), server bandwidth limits, network congestion, Wi-Fi interference, and distance to server. Expect 60–80% of rated speed in practice.

Bandwidth calculations are theoretical. Real-world throughput depends on protocol overhead, latency, and network conditions.
